DANSEFORESTILLING

DANCE PERFORMANCE
ANTS 1+1=3 is created by the Danish-Latvian choreographer Anastasija Olescuka in collaboration with senior researcher Hans Joachim Offenberg from Aarhus University. Five dancers embody the world of ants, accompanied by music composed by Turkman Souljah. Ants are workers, engineers, warriors, and lovers—they cultivate nature, maintain ecological balance, and function as a superorganism so structured that it makes the Scandinavian welfare state seem like pure anarchy.
By blurring the boundaries between ants and humans, the performance magnifies some of life’s most fundamental themes—survival, community, strength, and belonging—through some of the smallest creatures on Earth. It draws striking parallels to current societal debates on gender, crises, and conflicts.
In a time marked by extreme individualism, the performance poses the question: How can creatures that are often perceived as pests inspire us to embrace collective solutions?
ANTS 1+1=3 is remarkable in its exploration of new aesthetics and experimental expressions. The performance is characterized by its unique artistic combination of performing arts and natural sciences. With a distinctive movement language shaped by the dancers’ backgrounds in street dance, voguing, club dance, martial arts, and principles of insect movement, ANTS 1+1=3 invites the audience into the ant colony—where science is set in motion and society is placed under the microscope.
